Does Informix Support DATALESS clients...
Posted in 1996
Hi : We are evaluating the concepts of DATALESS clients and would appreciate any help recvd. Our current configuration is : Server : SPARC 1000, Solaris 2.4, 6 CPU's , 1G memory I-SQL 4.13.UD2 ONLINE 5.04.UC1 I-STAR 5.04.UC1 Client : Sparc 20, Solaris 2.4, 2 CPU's, 512 Mb I-SQL 4.13.UD2 I-4GLRT 4.13.UD1 I-NET 5.04.UC1 Our 4GL Application Currently we have 4 Clients (of same configuration) connecting to the server. Each of the clients can boot of on their own i.e they are STANDALONE. But we are evaluating a change this scenario. We would like to make a change so that the Clients boot from the Server over the network. In short we would like to make them 'DATALESS' clients. The reason for considering a switch is to reduce the amount of system administration for each of the clients. All of the filesystem would be nfs mounted (except tmp and swap) from the server ,including $INFORMIXDIR. We would be using cachefs feature in this scenario. Questions : - Would Informix 5.x support such a client-server setup ? - If yes : o Can the users log into the client machine and access the database on the server? o Can the Informix software currently residing on the Client side (i.e SQL, 4GLRT, I-NET) be pushed onto the server ? o Would I-NET be required ? o Are there any cons to this type of configuration as compared to the one currently existing. - Has anybody implemented this kind of setup with Informix as a database? All help appreciated. -- Rajiv Jhaveri DBA ================================================================= Voice : (908) 949 7987 Pager : 544 7872 or 1-800 225 0256 PIN 310902 Fax : (908) 949 1726 E-mail: rajivp@qsun.ho.att.com =================================================================
