Re: Accessing Informix with PHP3 and with Perl

Elisa You *will* need the Informix esql/c libraries to compile PHP with Informix support and the DBD::Informix module. For DBD::Informix, if I remember correctly, you will also need an Informix database if you want to run make test. You can get this at http://www.intraware.com. Its a free download if you are a member, and membership is free too. Just to add another variable into the mix, if you really dont want to download the Informix libraries, you can use Java servlets from the webserver (apache) machine, and install only the Informix JDBC driver on the webserver. You will need to rebuild apache with jserv however, or install JRUN. Sun's servletrunner is ok, but you probably dont want to use it for your application. Of course, you need to make sure that you can connect to the database from the webserver machine - I suppose you have already configured sqlhosts and services. If not check out the admin guide for a fuller explanation. We have tried two separate approaches to this problem but are stymied on both. One involved setting up PHP3 as an Apache module on the Linux machine. The problem we have here is that when the PHP is configured, we have to supply it the Informix variable with a path. It cannot find the path because the Informix setup is on a separate machine, which at that point is accessible only via ftp or telnet, and not present in the local environment. The error message thrown at the end of the install is: "WARNING: You asked for Informix support, but don't have $INFORMIXDIR environment value set up. Configuring and compiling Informix support to PHP3 is impossible and has been turned off. Please try again after setting up your environment." In a PHP forum, someone advised us to try downloading an "Informix Client Library" and installing that on the Linux machine. But when we visited the Informix site we could find no trace or pointer towards such an animal. Does it exist? Our Perl problem is similar. In order to query the Informix database using Perl Cgi modules and HTML forms, we need to install the appropriate database driver, specified in ur Perl manuals as DBD::Informix. But once again, after having thoroughly searched the site at www.informix.com/, we can find no trace of this database driver for love or money. So, can anyone advise us on Web interactivity with Informix using either PHP3 or Perl, and on where to look for our missing parts? Many thanks, Elisa Francesca Roselli and Gregory Losson
