A few guesses only I'm afraid as I haven't used Slackware for ages.
Perhaps you just need to run "ldconfig" (as root) to pick up the link to
the library you want. But as you say adding the link got the installer
working it's unlikely this is the solution.
I do wonder whether you have the correct version of libpam. I have tried
before creating a link to a library of a different name and implied
version but this has never worked for me. There is a libpam library of
the right version on rpmfind.net but don't blame me if installing this
breaks your system.
Why Slackware? I don't want to get into a distro war but IBM has a
helpful list of distributions and what is required to get them to work
at http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/linux/ids.html
