Re: Basic things about Informix on NT

Ricardo,
You're experiencing the worst situation that would happen to a UNIX user
who has to work with NT. Whatever, it is easy.
Database side
1) Database admin. tools always in your %INFORMIXDIR%\\bin directory
(such as dbaccess, onstat, ontape etc) Also you have (on the server
side) informix administration tools (Informix Command Center, Storage
manager, Informix setup). You can access them using Start->Informix
Admin. Tools;
2) There is no sqlhosts file. You have to deal with legendary NT
Registry (actually Setnet32 deals with sqlhosts entries, but it is
better for you to keep this in mind).
3) Engine wise almost everything is the same as UNIX box. Instead of
having devices, you will have logical disks.
4) Your logical disk drives must be NTFS formatted, otherwise informix
does not create dbspace (even does not install software to FAT
partition)
5) Generally, do not trust Informix Backup and Restore GUI tool. (that's
my opinion). Always use ontape.
6) If service pack 4 (or higher) installed on NT server, you have to use
either IDS 7.23 TC14 or IDS 7.30 TC7 (I'm not sure for 7.3x version)
7) To stop the engine use either (Control Panel -> Services -> Informix
Dynamic Server) Service or on the informix command line utilities write
"onmode -ky".
8) To start the engine use either same service or on the informix
command line utilities write either "starts online" or "net start
online"
9) READ RELEASE NOTES...
Clients
1) On the client side, you need Informix ROM (relational object manager)
2.10. You can get this software from www.intraware.com for free.
2) Also you need to setup sqlhosts entries on clients using setnet32.
Those are the quick issues I can immediately suggest. If you have any
other specific question please let me know.
