OnLine 7.10 Locking

I have been having a serious row locking problem with Online 7.10 on an IBM RS/6000 J30 with AIX 4.1.2. What seems to be happening is that whenever a row is updated (and changed), several adjacent rows (at least 20), or possibly the whole page, is being locked until the transaction is committed. This is causing the following error when another user attempts to update a nearby row: SQL statement error number -243. Could not position within a table (sdg.gmin_prf). SYSTEM error number -107. ISAM error: record is locked. All tables use row-level locking and the isolation is DIRTY READ. I have not received an answer yet from Informix Technical Support. The only similar problem I know of is the adjacent row lock with versions 5.x and down, however this problem is much worse. Has anyone had similar problems and/or no problems with Online 7.10?
