I have just recently purchased the O'Reilly & Associates and Red Hat Software Linux CD's - Red Hat Linux 3.0.3 (kernel 1.2.13) and was hoping someone can help me since I'm new to Linux installations. I know the kernel is an old version but will upgrade if I manage to complete the installation. I'm attempting to install Linux on my laptop which is a IBM Thinkpad 380D, 32 Mb Ram, Multi media, 2.1 Gb Disk which was re-partitioned using Fips - 1.3 Mb for Windows 95, rest for Linix which equates to just over 700 Mb. The laptop has a built in CD Drive and Floppy. Things were going well until I started the floppy-less installation. The following is an outline of my steps to perform a floppy-less Linux Installation from CD:- Booted Thinkpad in DOS mode only Executed Redhat on Installation CD i.e d:\\redhat Following prompts were answered from options provided:- Drive of CDROM D SCSI Drive 0 (None) Ethernet Device 0 (None) CD-ROM 0 IDE/ATAPI or SCSI CD Drive device 2 /dev/hdb = Second IDE Drive Message displayed after verifying the above: Root Device ID (major, minor): 0340 Prompted whether I wished additional boot parameters: No Messages displayed: Unknown PCI Drive Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fd on 03:40 What does the above mean. Do I need to provide additional boot parameters ?? Your help would be appreicated. If you prefer to email me, my address is tkarton@7-Eleven.com.hk Tony.
