My experience with informix has been soley on Solaris. Currently, we are running Solaris 9 and IDS 9.40.FC5. I am being asked if I can support several IDS 9.40 databases running on AIX. I am not expected to do anything with the operating system at all - just the database... If I expect IDS 9.40 to be the consistent across platforms, am I in for any surprises? I mean if I am able to administer 9.40 on Solaris, then I should be able to do the same on AIX...right? thanks John Campbell
Personally I think that to be an adequate DBA you need to understand the underlying OS at least as well as Informix. I for one, despite being a self-appointed Informix God, often used to turn down IDS-on-Windows work (although less so now I have colleagues with such skills). I think good OS knowledge is vital. However, as about the only DBA in England who hasn't worked for DHL, I am told by others that many big sites have a completely different team do the sysadmin work. Personally I don't see how I could be as effective if a vital part of my armoury - sysdmin tasks - is derogated to someone else.
