Typically ported by Informix, and a :pretty god value for performance (in the high-end market, that is). And :yes, they're intel based. So are Sequent, NCR, Unisys and others. It doesn't make them PC type servers with their price advantage and good performance. I happen to think that one should immediately forget Data General and several other small (and some larger) manufacturers. They would all have been fine had there been one standard Unix for Intel based processors that Informix could port to. As long as there is not, Informix will have lots of problems (costs) porting to all the small mee too manufacturers in the Unix world that can't possibly contribute anything realy essential to the market. (According to the TPC-C results I have seen the price/performance isn't even very good.) The day all these manufacturers agree to make their Unix implementations exactly the same (not only "compatible") so Informix and others could do one port to them the issue would be quite different. Then they had done something valuable in the Unix server marketplace. Until that time the world mainly turns arround Sun, HP, IBM and the true PC type servers. The former for scalability, the latter for price/performance up to a medium size and growing.
