Perhaps `echo | ontape -c`?

In POSIX compatible shells, `echo '/n'` prints simply /n.
printf is the shell function which interprets escape sequences, like
\\n, \\t, \\r, etc.
`echo`, without any arguments, prints a new line, which is what you
want.
Hence, for clarity's sake:
printf '\\n' | ontape -s -L -0
Which is really unnecessary, since we have `echo`.
