Migration from AIX to Linux
Posted in 2013
Justin asked whether moving an Informix database from AIX to Linux on x64 (HP) hardware would hurt reliability/performance, and whether running CentOS instead of the 'certified' RHEL would cause problems with IBM support. No formal answer from IBM emerged, but the consensus was reassuring: Informix runs very well on Linux/Intel, is officially supported on several distros, and CentOS is essentially rebranded RHEL, with posters reporting rock-solid IDS 11.50 on CentOS and no support pushback. One dissenter urged a vendor-supported OS for critical/HA systems, and another noted endianness differences add extra conversion steps when migrating from AIX.

Hi all. We are currently running our primary database (accounting, sales, operations, etc) on an Informix database on AIX. We are considering a move to Linux to move away from IBM hardware since x64 seems to be a cheaper option. So, two questions: 1) For those who have experience with both IBM hardware and x64 hardware, are there been any significant reliability and/or performance differences between the platforms? 2) The only 'certified' Linux for both Informix and our hardware selection (HP) is RHEL. I realize that different distributions have different toolsets and library versions, but how critical is the distribution to the proper performance of Informix? Will Informix technical support be willing to help us if we decide to go with a different distribution (e.g. Centos), or will it be a battle with them in a time of need? Thanks in advance, -Justin
Informix "officially" supports Debian, Ubuntu, RHEL, Open SUSE, SUSE SLES, Fedora, and Asianux on Intel and AMD x86/64 processors. Informix runs very well on Linux/Intel. If you are concerned about hardware reliability then get a Linux system from one of the majors like an IBM X#### series server or Dell's or HP's versions. A bit more expensive but you'll sleep at night. Art Art S. We use locally built hardware - intel/supermicro - that is a fraction of the cost of the name brands, for example 50% cheaper than Dell and either Fedora or CentOS - never had any issues out of the norm The hard part was finding a quality builder :-) Paul Watson +1 913-387-7529 www.oninit.com On May 2, 2013, at 11:42, "Art Kagel" <art.kagel@gmail.com> wrote: > Informix "officially" supports Debian, Ubuntu, RHEL, Open SUSE, SUSE SLES, > Fedora, and Asianux on Intel and AMD x86/64 processors. > > Informix runs very well on Linux/Intel. Along with the other comments, CentOS is basically RedHat; so when you call technical support, you can tell them you are running RHEL6...or whichever version you are running. > To: ids@iiug.org > From: jkillen@allamericanasphalt.com > Subject: Migration from AIX to Linux [30181] > Date: Thu, 2 May 2013 12:29:12 -0400 > > Hi all. Sorry I wasn't more clear. Yes, Informix supports Debian, Ubuntu, etc, but the HP hardware only officially supports RHEL. So when I say "The only 'certified' Linux for both Informix and our hardware selection", I meant RHEL was the cross-section that was supported on both. -Justin -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Art Kagel Sent: Thursday, May 02, 2013 9:43 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Re: Migration from AIX to Linux [30182] Informix "officially" supports Debian, Ubuntu, RHEL, Open SUSE, SUSE SLES, Fedora, and Asianux on Intel and AMD x86/64 processors. I like the idea of using CentOS (we have 3 or 4 CentOS servers already), I just wasn't sure how much effort it would be to get support in the event that we needed it. Interesting, because I am contracting at a major player in the auto industry and their standard appears to be SLES on HP. I manage some HP G7 servers with SLES 10 and 11 on them. Disclaimer: I have no knowledge of what negotiations or politics went into that decision however. My personal opinion: you should not trust 100% of your database to an OS that does not have support from its own manufacturer. For small and medium boxes? I should give it a try. If you don´t have special uptime needs (no customer SLAs, for example), that should not be a trouble for you. If you will need to get full Informix high availability and failover, for example, I´d consider to pay for a proficient OS, and support. Here is a nice blog on this: http://www.rackaid.com/resources/things-to-know-about-centos-linux/ Hope it helps. We use a mixture of AIX and Linux. Most systems are running RHEL on IBM hardware. It works beautifully - had no issues. AIX hardware tends to be big-endian whereas Linux hardware tends to be little-endian. This has meant extra steps for us when we convert from one to the other. Ray.

Have you had experiences with Informix support while running on > CentOS? How has that experience been? Paul wrote "Rock solid on CentOS 5.latest and IDS 11.50" That wasn't *actually* what he asked though, was it?! The kind of customer who wants to save a few hundred dollars on not buying "proper" RedHat is in my experience unlikely to have kept up IBM maintenance either, but I have one customer who does and I've never been asked to verify by IBM that the OS is truly RedHat and not CentOS. I suppose if you had a really tricky problem IBM might use the non-supported OS as a get-out, but again in my experience once you speak to an IBM technician they are very helpful and unlikely to refuse help. Finally, to echo what Paul said, we use CentOS internally as well as at a handful of customer sites, and haven't had a moment's trouble.
