I would like to avoid digging into INFX product specs. Can someone from this list briefly tell me what are the main differences between these database servers ? Are 7 and 9 two separate product lines (this was my understanding so far) ? O is 9 a follow-up (upgrade) to 7 ? I understood that 2000 was to be the one and only server product for the future, with a migration path for both 7 and 9. Correct ? TIA Pierre

However, I take pity on anyone who may have to read marketing generated specs, so: > Can someone from this list briefly tell me what are the main differences > between these database servers ? Let's differentiate 9.1x and 9.2x/9.3x. IDS/UDO 9.1x was a product based on the 7.1x source tree merged with the OORDBMS code. It was behind the live development tree of 7.xx even before it's release and no attempt was made to back/for port the changes. The 9.2x (and soon 9.3x) is a merger of the 7.30 (7.31 for 9.3x) code base into the 9.xx code. It contains substantial optimization of the code over BOTH 7.30 and 9.1x but does not contain the newest 7.31 features. At this point Informix has identified the 9.xx product line as the ONLY line that will acquire any significant upgrades in features though 7.3x will continue to be maintained in full production status. While 9.1x was missing features needed to be a full blown transaction engine (performance not the least) 9.2x is fully capable of being your only RDBMS or ORDBMS. > Are 7 and 9 two separate product lines (this was my understanding so far) ? > O is 9 a follow-up (upgrade) to 7 ? Both, at least as far as 9.2x is concerned, 9.1 was just not complete enough to be an upgrade path. > I understood that 2000 was to be the one and only server product for the > future, with a migration path for both 7 and 9. Correct ? Correct. IDS.2000 (9.2x) contains all the 9.1 features plus all of 7.30 features and even improves performance over 7.30 for the same schema and queries and is vastly faster than 9.1x for ORDBMS operations. If you had a version of 7 (like 7.22) the logical thing to do would be go to 9.2. Informix keeps things around as long as client demand overpowers their natural inclination to phase out older products. That's what I know about it.
