Hmmm.... let me guess, Mr. Van Zant is most likely an M$ NT "admin" who loves the point and click ease of windows despite its lack of stability, security and speed... I would go as far as to say that Mr. Van Zant has no real experience with AIX. I administer several RS/6000 machines that are running AIX v4.1.4 with Informix-SE v6.1. Allow me to add that this is a match made in heaven. AIX machines are extremely fast, and as if that wasn't enough, they are unbeatable in scalability for your database and applications. However, Mr. Van Zant most likely was scared of not being able to 'point-and-click' on the 'install' button when attempting to install Informix on an AIX machine. This is true, if your main use for an AIX box is to run Informix database(s) and Applications, there are environmental variables that one would want to tailor to suit ones needs for increased performance. This is something that is partially dependent on hardware resources and the main purposes of the database (i.e. software mirroring will naturally slow a database that is often updated much more than a db mostly querried). If the original poster would like tips on configuring Informix to run at optimum speed under AIX, please email me.
