I'm a new DBA so I can't provide really great answers, but I'm learning how important this subject is...and how complicated. Ask them how big the database(s) were that they administered before and how many users. Size can make a big difference in how you handle a particular database. They should at least be able to say, for example, "1 production/OLTP database with 7 G with 60+ users, 1 development database that duplicated production with 7 developers and 1 DSS database that was 15 G with 15 users" If they don't know those kinds of basics..... I would wonder... Also, a database in the terabyte-sized region would be much different than a little old 7 G database. For example, a 7 G database doesn't necessarily benefit much from fragmented tables. The maintenance overhead could cost more than it's worth. Good luck.
