When you buy Informix you buy a license for a given number of users
:- 1,8,16,32 etc.
Up to Online version 5.01 there was no enforced limit. In Online 5.01
the licensing IS enforced. There is a license deamon which does this
enforcement (I can't remember the name, I think is starts with lm
for License Manager). This is not work/was not liked so Informix
removed it in Online 5.02. (The versions may have been 5.02/5.03 I'm
not sure).
Apparenetly when you dial the emergency services in Amercia (the 911
number) your call is logged into an Online system (I have also
seen that mentioned in some Informix literature at work). I hear a
rumour that they refused to have license limitation.
You could imagine the phone call "Yes I know you are in a building
that's on fire but I'm getting a message about user licensing....Hey
could one of you guys log out?????....."
I have heard that in Online version 7.12 licensing IS enforced, the
USERTHRADS parameter have been removed and the limit is what you pay
for. They way for find this out is to do an onstat -V to get your
version number.
To check the number of users your are licensed for do
more $INFORMIXDIR/etc/.snfile
and look on the line containing Online... to get your serial number
(something like AAB#C123657). The letter after the #
gives the number of users you are licensed for:-
A) 1
B) 8
C) 16
E) 32
F) 64
G) 128
H) 256
J) unlimited
V) unlimited
