onbar unable to open server connection

IDS 7.3 UC7 / IBM RS/6000 running AIX 4.3 / onbar using ADSM
I've been trying to figure out why all of a sudden onbar began failing
to perform backups via an alarm script. From the onbar log:
----------------------------------------------
informix/bin/onbar_d -l
"ERROR: Unable to open connection to server: Informix Dynamic Server
Stopped..
----------------------------------------------
However, the Informix server was *not* stopped at the time of this
problem. I also checked with the ADSM people, and they were not down.
The events preceding this problem:
o instance was initialized (new physical layout)
o dbspaces created
o logical logs created in separate dbspace, ontape invoked to make them
usable
o database created, tables created, data loaded
o TAPEDEV and LTAPEDEV changed from /dev/null to files on disk and the
engine bounced.
Next day when I realized that the engine was blocked, I did an ontape
-a, which seemed to clear the problem (the tape device is set to a file
on disk; normally we don't use ontape since we are using onbar, with the
storage manager being adsm).
We've been chugging along normally since the blockage was cleared.
Does anyone know what might have happened, or what I can look at next to
move along in my investigation? The piece of information that I am most
interested in getting insight about is the onbar log indicating that
onbar thought the IDS was stopped (when indeed it was not).
Thanks in advance.
