June should know better, but I guess she's been away tooo long. :-) Of course you can drop a chunk with a tablespace tablespace in it. Even when an extent is empty, it is not removed. If you've ever worked with Baan long enough, you come to expect EVERY chunk to contain a tablespace tablespace. ;-) I would go with David's bug theory. -- Mark. +----------------------------------------------------------+-----------+ | Mark D. Well, I certainly have been away a long time... When I left Informix, I don't think
you could drop a chunk out of a dbspace that wasn't empty; I believe that functionality
was added to the first release that came out after I left. So I certainly don't know
whether there is a restriction on dropping chunks if empty tblspace tblspace extents
reside in the otherwise empty chunk.
But in this case, I am simply pointing out that just because the chunk is empty, we
don't know for sure that the tblspace tblspace extent in this chunk is empty. We only
saw the oncheck -pe listing for this one chunk; other chunks in the dbspace may still
contain tables and this tblspace tblspace extent can hold tblspace pages for tables
which are in this dbspace but located in other chunks of the dbspace. In this case,
you certainly could not drop the chunk. Mark, I'm surprised at you.

To clarify the situation. YOU CANNOT drop a chunk that has a tblspace tblspace extent in it. Here is an example. Dbspace 2, First chunk 3 Chunk 3, next chunk 4 Chunk 4, last chunk of dbspace 2. If the tblspace tblspace was extended into chunk 4, you will never be able to drop chunk 4 because of the tblspace tblspace extent. We check the number of pages used plus overhead. Of course there are two unused reserved pages, plus 1 chunk free list page. If this is equal to the size then we consider the chunk not empty and we can drop it. Now, if chunks 3 and 4 are empty, then you will be able to drop the dbspace. Darin Tracy Advanced Support Informix Software, Inc. "Mark D.
