Online and Optical store

Does anyone know what the situation is with regard to Optical Storage of traditional tables (no BLOBS etc) in Online? The Problem ----------- In a nutshell - the problem is about how to archive old tables but still get at them fairly quickly. Our app creates a new 1.2G (and growing) table each month. Each months table has a new table_name as the old data is sometimes required too. Some sites archive old months data to tape and some try to keep it all on-line. Neither of these are brilliant solutions: . on-line - old data takes up an unreasonable proportion of the storage. . on tape - most of the old tables have to be accessed several times each week and the data takes too long to reload; plus the logistics are a pain for the users. In the ideal world we would like to be able to tell our customers they can just buy an optical drive (WORM or re-writable would be equally good) and put the old tables on a disk. When they want that months data just stick the old disk in and 'Presto' there's your data. And I doubt we are alone in wanting this. I am specifically thinking about Online v7.whatever but would be interested in any information that let me achieve this sort of swapping in and out of tables. My Current Understanding ------------------------ Online v7.1 contains no built in support for Optical devices despite the tech sheet saying: > An optical virtual processor class can even be added to > handle the I/O processing if you need to add optical media > storage devices to your system.and > Rich Underlying Functionality: > ... Optical Disk Support Online/Optical is an add on product that extends Online to allow it to use certain optical drives (and is presumably what the above statements refer to) but it only works for BLOBS. The choice of supported drives is limited (?). I guess I could make each optical disk into a number of cooked files - but I would rather not have to.
