How long to install IDS 9.4 including tools

I'm supposed to install IDS 9.4 and all the tools onto a new AIX 520 machine and I have no idea how long this might take. I'm not talking about setting up the database itself - just the install of Informix. I'm just asking for guesstimates as I really have no clue since I've never done an Informix install from scratch - only upgrades within IDS 7.x. I'm really having misgivings about the schedule I'm being asked to fulfill, which is to set up a new machine and have it ready for production in 1 day now - I'll have a 2nd day to work on it if necessary before I tell them "I told ya' I needed more time", but they're really pushing to do everything in 1. They expect to go live on it 2 days after I get access to the machine and I don't have a machine to test on prior to this.
It's a whole new machine and disk subsystem that's replacing an older one. Glad to hear the actual install should be relatively quick - that'll give me lots of time (well, a little anyway) to work on the configuration. It should be real interesting when it gets tested - i.e., when all the users show up and start trying to use it at the same time. -----Original Message----- From: Robert Roussey [mailto:RobertRo@SpiritAir.com] Sent: Wednesday, June 01, 2005 1:21 PM To: Danny Wright Subject: RE: How long to install IDS 9.4 including tools [5083] Is this just an upgrade? I usually just install in another dir, copy over your $ONCONFIG, make the appropriate changes, put the sqlhosts file in place. Then stop the instance, rename dirs to point to the new software and start up the db. Going from a 7.XX product to 9.XX will do conversions on the system catalogs and all databases (for long db, table and col names and such). Install the tools first (4GL, ESQL, I4GL) then SDK, then IDS I believe. I was told in years past: TEN; Tools, Engine, Network (SDK?). I think 'E'ngine is last now. Installs of software should only take 1/2 hour or so. CONFIGURING on the other hand........ In my experience installing the software is a pretty quick procedure. The only difference between an installation and an upgrade is that you also have to install the tools, minor detail, and you have to initialize the instance. The time requirement that comes to mind is a couple of hours and that's if you take your time or are unsure of the steps required. If you have an instance to model this one after, config file, then the instance initialization should be fairly quick as well --- Danny Wright <dwright@sherwoodfoods.com> wrote: > I'm supposed to install IDS 9.4 and all the tools > onto a new AIX 520 machine > and I have no idea how long this might take. > > > > I'm not talking about setting up the database itself > - just the install of > Informix. > > > > I'm just asking for guesstimates as I really have no > clue since I've never > done an Informix install from scratch - only > upgrades within IDS 7.x. > > > > I'm really having misgivings about the schedule I'm > being asked to fulfill, > which is to set up a new machine and have it ready > for production in 1 day > now - I'll have a 2nd day to work on it if necessary > before I tell them "I > told ya' I needed more time", but they're really > pushing to do everything in > 1. > > > > They expect to go live on it 2 days after I get > access to the machine and I > don't have a machine to test on prior to this. > > > > > > > >
