Oracle does indeed provide a number of Transparent or Procedural Gateways to "foreign" datastores such as DB2, TurboImage, Rdb, SQL/400 and a number of others also. The gateways make the other datastore look like an Oracle database as far as the users and developers are concerned. Hence, through the use of database links and synonyms there is no extra application code required to access the data outside Oracle. An additional advantage of the gateways is that data can be downloaded into Oracle very simply using standard SQL commands and in most cases the gateways are WRITE as well as READ enabled. Thus, data maybe transferred bi-directionally. Oracle is currently developing gateways to Informix, Sybase and Ingres. Please contact Oracle direct for further information on availability.
