ISM RPC Error
Posted in 2012
User on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS 64-bit couldn't run ism_add/ism_show to make informix an ISM administrator, getting "RPC error, Remote system error"; later ism_startup -init also failed with a memory fault, only nsrexecd running, empty daemon.log, and rpcinfo unable to contact the portmapper. Suggestions included checking an IBM technote, ensuring portmap/rpcbind and all nsr daemons (nsrd, nsrmmd, nsrindexd) are running, watching for firewall blocks, and enabling ISM's undocumented debug by starting nsrexecd/nsrd with -D 10 and logging output. The poster finally traced it to a bad /etc/hosts entry; after fixing that, ISM worked.

I'm trying to set up the informix user as an ISM administrator but getting the error below. root@informix1:~# /opt/IBM/informix/bin/ism_add -admin informix@localhost ism_add: RPC error, Remote system error I'm using Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS. Any idea what I need to do to get this working? Thanks.
Hello. I´ve already configured ISM, without any issue like yours. Could you take a look at this doc? It might help you.... http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21105298 After that, if you´re still facing issues, just contact us again, ok? Hope it helps. Regards. Hello. I´m not mad at all, but have you googled for "informix webservices"? There´s a full article on DeveloperWorks, check it out: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/techarticle/dm-0802chakraborty/ Informix how-to website also has good contents about it: http://www.informixhowto.com/?tag=web-service There are several others, for Informix-4gl, and so on.... it will mostly depends on your development framework, ok? Hope it helps. Regards. Hi, Are you sure that the ISM daemons are running? Check the /nsr/logs/daemon.log for start up and other errors. I have had no problems with it on Fedora, CentOs and Red Hat. All 64 bit versions. Is your Ubuntu 64 bit or 32 bit? Jason,
My fun with setting up ISM continues. In fact, somehow I seem to have taken a step backwards and am now unable to initialize ISM:
# ./ism_shutdown -q
# ps -ef |grep [n]sr
# ./ism_startup -initstart_ism: is starting the ISM daemons.
Memory fault
${0##*/}: Still waiting for ISM daemons to become available...
${0##*/}: Still waiting for ISM daemons to become available...
start_ism: ISM server not running after 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
#
I am running Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS in 64-bit mode.
When I check the /nsr/logs/daemon.log file it is empty. I can see the following 2 processes running, however.
# ps -ef |grep [n]sr
root 4707 1 0 11:36 ? 00:00:00 /opt/IBM/informix//bin/nsrexecd
root 4708 4707 0 11:36 ? 00:00:00 /opt/IBM/informix//bin/nsrexecd
I hope someone can shed some light on this issue and how it can be resolved.
Thanks.

OK, I've reverted my ubuntu system back to a few days ago and begun the ISM installation process again. The daemons seem to be running now. However ... # ism_show -admins ism_show: RPC error, Remote system error I suspect the issue may be that portmap is not running. # rpcinfo: can't contact portmapper: RPC: Remote system error - Connection refused
Hi, ISM is RPC based so you do need either portmapper or rpcbind. You are missing quite a few of the nsr process, there should be others including nsrmmd and nsrindexd. It sometimes helps to execute the nsr process (nsrexecd and nsrd) directly from the terminal to catch error messages. Good luck, Jason
ISM Has 2 built-in debugging facilities, one to debug the XBSA library (which is documented), and another (undocumented) to debug the back-end of ISM. The second debug facility is relatively simple, we just need to start the daemons with a special option. IN order to do this, just replace in the ism_startup script the following lines: $INFORMIXDIR/bin/nsrexecd $INFORMIXDIR/bin/nsrd with: $INFORMIXDIR/bin/nsrexecd -D 10 > /tmp/nsrexecd.out 2>&1 & $INFORMIXDIR/bin/nsrd -D 10 > /tmp/nsrd.out 2>&1 & Obviously by the description of the OP, there is a problem with the nsrd daemon because it is dying. It could also be that you have a firewall or security routine that is blocking the portmapper ports. If you cannot figure out what is happening form the .out files I suggest you to open a tech support case. Guys, thanks for all the advice. The issue I was having actually turned out to be caused by a problem with the /etc/hosts file. Anyway, ISM is up and running now.
