New Informix setup
Posted in 2015
A user asked for the best way to consolidate three separate Informix 11.50.FC9 instances (HP-UX Itanium, ~1TB) onto one HP-UX box, keeping them as three instances. Art Kagel advised either backing up each server and restoring onto the new machine (installing the software, setting up chunks, copying ONCONFIG files, building a new sqlhosts), or using onclone to build RSS/HDR secondaries and swap roles. He confirmed only one 'informix' user and one software copy is needed; the instances are kept apart by distinct SERVERNUM values, ONCONFIG files, and ports/service names in sqlhosts and /etc/services, with a redirected restore if chunk paths change.

We have some request to migrate 3 informix instance into one box (HP-UX). Is there any better way to do this Thank you very much --001a1140f3cc1422fa0521bb6a16
Any better way than what ? From which O/S are you migrating ? Between which versions of IDS are you migrating ? What are the sizes of the databases you want to migrate ? Are you wanting to put three all in one instance or retain as three separate instances ? The best way and easiest way would be to archive the three servers and restore on the new box. Obviously you will first have to install the Informix software, configure the chunks, copy the ONCONFIG files, and make a new sqlhosts file. You could also use the onclone utility to create the new servers as RSS secondaries then upgrade them to HDR and swap roles making the new servers the primaries and funally shutting down the old servers and make the new ones stand alone. I have one clarification, Informix software is required to installed three right? each one having separate users like informix1, informix2 and informix3. But the installation informix on the root right. Is there any conflict three instances same boxes. No. You only need one user "informix" for all three instances and one copy of the software. All three instances will be using the same copy of the software on disk. Yes you will be installing the software as "root" not as informix or some other user. The three instances can coexist on a single server because you will use three different SERVERNUM values in the three ONCONFIG files and different PORT numbers or SERVICE names in the sqlhosts file. By convention you will name the ONCONFIG files as onconfig.<servername> but that's just a convention, you can name them anything you want. The ONCONFIG and INFORMIXSERVER environment variables will specify which instance you are talking to for maintenance. You may have to set up new SERVICE names in the /etc/services file for the three instances. Since the three instances are currently on separate machines, note that if they are all using the same chunk paths (or if you just need the chunk paths to be different on the new machine) you will have to do a redirected restore for each instance to remap the old chunk paths to the new ones. Look that up in the Backup and Restore Guide. Art Art S. Art, Thank you very much May i know which files to verify for the three instance one box? I.e. Onconfig, sqlhosts and etc/services. Is there anything else required to verify? Just those three (well five if you count that each indtance will have its own ONCONFIG file). There is only one sqlhosts file unless the three instances should not know about each other.
