I am have a sco box that needs 3 tapes to do a backup. Does anyone know of a way I can get it to write to the slots consecutively. I am tired of sitting around for 8 hours switching tapes. Please help. Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Write a little filter to read from a named pipe (FIFO) and write to the three drives sequentially as one fills it starts the next, or block by block spreading the load and the data across the three drives. Then tell IDS that the FIFO is the tape device and make TAPESIZE large enough to fill all three tapes. Art S. Kagel
Art, Did you ever get a chance to use one of those DLT arrays on the AV/20000 systems? Those drives were really fast when you striped across all 5 drives. I don't think I ever was unable to recover data from those, it always worked. Expensive though. James Ferrill "Art S. Do what we do, use an "expect" script to handle the ontape responses. We
use expect scripts to handle ontape commands and their requests for another
tape.
Have fun.

DGUX treats the array as a single device writing to it as a RAID5 device. I know NO RAID5, but it does not apply to a on-use tape array and gives us some added redundancy and if a tape or drive fails during the archive we do not have to start over again unless we lose two drives. Also DGUX lets us rebuild the missing tape offline so even then, after the rebuild, I still have redundancy in the stored archive. Since a level0 on some of our servers takes over 36 hours with 7.24 (20 hours with 7.31) not having to start over is a BIG deal. Art S. Kagel > James Ferrill > > "Art S. There is a utility that I uploaded to IIUG years ago that does what you are asking. You can code it to do whatever you want between tapes (switching DLT array, ...). It is written in Perl. If you go to www.iiug.org WWW site, do a search on db_ontape. There is a new Informix book coming out called Informix Handbook where they got my permission to include this routing in the book's CD. -- Bill Border Agilent Technologies bb22@uswest.net Low-Cost, UX-Based Oracle/Informix Monitor: http://dbamon.com James Ferrill wrote in message <3978C288.59755BA2@courtspecialists.com>... >Art, > >Did you ever get a chance to use one of those DLT arrays on the AV/20000 >systems?
