Program Hang

Hi, I'm having problems with an application that uses Informix 7.24UC7. The application is using the SE database engine. The application is running on Solaris 2.5.x The application processes that run as root have no problems accessing the database. The application process that runs in user mode hangs when it attempts to open the database. From examination of the truss output generated from the program, it appears that the application is waiting for a LWP semaphore. The strange thing is that the user-mode program works fine on our test machine, but NOT on the customers machine (which has a higher security configuration). Comparing the truss output from our machine and the customer's machine, it appears that the user mode program attempts to "fork and exec" the "sqlexec" process to talk to the database. On the customer's machine, the fork calls are never made, while on our test machine, the fork calls are made. Any suggestions? Thanks in Advance, cp. Who owns the database? In other words who were you logged in as when
the database was created? If you look at the .dbs directory and it's
contents they will normally be owned by that user (except for tables
created by other users) and should be in group informix.
The user informix should be in the group informix and NO OTHER USERS
should.
Permissions on the Unix files should be 660 (770 for the .dbs
directory).
Check your informix is correctly installed by logging in as a non-root
user and creating a database, then looking at the UNIX owners &
permissions. If not as follows you need to reinstall the engine
LOGGED IN AS ROOT.
-Sunnydev-v4-720.UE1-v4 sally > ls -ld sw.dbs
drwxrwx--- 2 sally informix 1536 Sep 11 13:37 sw.dbs
-Sunnydev-v4-720.UE1-v4 sally >cd sw.dbs
-Sunnydev-v4-720.UE1-v4 sally >ls -l | pg
-rw-rw---- 1 sally informix 0 Sep 11 13:37 syschecks.dat
-rw-rw---- 1 sally informix 3072 Sep 11 13:37 syschecks.idx
-rw-rw---- 1 sally informix 1024 Sep 11 13:37 syscolauth.dat
-rw-rw---- 1 sally informix 4096 Sep 11 13:37 syscolauth.idx
etc.
(this shows that 'sally' owns the databse 'sw')
If that is OK check you have granted users permission to connect to
the database. If you think that is OK finally try connecting via
dbaccess and it's Connect option.
HTH
PS root should never own a db, IMHO. And IMHO root shouldn't be using
it either in most situations.
