SetNet32 is a utility to configure the environment needed for several client-side applications (from Informix), defining variables used on displays, connection types, formats, Global Language Support, editors, and so on... In your case, your client-side application is Visual Basic, and so you shouldn't worry about these, at least for the moment. Later, you'll find usefullness in some of the variables listed in setnet32. For the moment, you just need to use the "Server Information" tab and fill in the blanks. Note this, first: Your IDS Engine has a thread bound to a certain TCP/IP service, which it monitors for incoming messages (clients). You can figure out what service is being used by viewing the "$INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts" file. The first column refers to an instance's NAME, and the fourth column refers to the SERVICE used in communications. Note the line with ONSOCTCP or ONTLITCP (meaning TCP-IP protocol over SOCKETS or TLI interface). The service on that line is listed in "/etc/services". Lookup this file and add the corresponding entry to your PC's "C:\\WINNT\\SYSTEM32\\DRIVERS\\ETC\\SERVICES" file. Now let's fill in those blanks in SetNet32: Informix Server: the instance name, as seen on the sqlhosts file Hostname: the node (machine) name where IDS resides (the server) Protocolname: onsoctcp (even if your server has ONTLITCP) Service Name: the one you found, or just the number (e.g. 1526) Options: x=??? (substitute the instance name for the ???) Make this the default server, and then proceed to create your ODBC data sources, where you will be asked to fill some of these parameters again, and also the name of a database (remember, a data source means a connection to a DATABASE, not to a database SERVER) Well, I sincerely hope this helps. If you find yourself in trouble with something along your way (even later, with the data source in place) you should post your message in the newsgroup, to a bigger audience, guaranteing quicker and best of all different responses.
