[Mike Jagdis <mike@roan.co.uk>] | | (Do we assume Informix have such an agreement with SCO? There are | bugs there which can be serious problems - such as the oss449 | STREAMS stack corruption bug. Perhaps you are confusing political | partnerships for marketing purposes with in depth kernel support?) I think it suffices to shorten the above to one word. they are "confused". free software is a mind-boggling concept to "suits" because the word "free" usually means "useless junk" in their vocabulary. none of them would even dream of giving away anything that has value for free and thus, according to their set of values, Linux must be "useless junk". well, Netscape and Microsoft provide the world with software at "no cost" to browse the web, yet there is a *HUGE* industry based on their products. now Netscape was a Mosaic-spinoff. many people claim that the original code trunk for Netscape actually WAS Mosaic. the same is claimed about MSIE. wether it is true or not I have NO idea. comparing the software that has become a $$$ industry with Linux is even more interesting. Netscape are still novices at supporting their software and they never seem to fix bugs in released software because they are occupied creating The Next Generation. meanwhile the Linux kernel is maintained, tested, debugged and patched whenever there is an error. companies sell support for distributions and if you have a problem with the kernel your local Linux-supporting support-contractor can FIX the problem for you. compare that to waiting weeks for bugfixes. months if the vendor doesn't find the bug (or you) significant. it is an insult to people's intelligence to say that creating software for the Netscape browser is safer than creating software for Linux because Linux doesn't have commercial support. I think there's no use trying to bully Informix into porting to Linux. if they don't want to, fine, I don't blame them given that the Linux community is acting like Amiga zealo...er users used to do (and still do). also after having seen Informix' hypeful homepages *trying* to locate some technical information on their database(s) I gave up because all I could find was marketing talk, marketing talk and marketing talk. this tells me that I will probably become very frustrated when trying to buy something from Informix. I'd rather not. I left and continued to read the Solid manual where I left off (check out <URL:http://www.solidtech.com/support/manuals.htm>). -Bj'rn -- Bj'rn Borud <borud@guardian.no> | "The Net interprets censorship <URL:http://www.pvv.unit.no/~borud/> | as damage and routes around it."
