Multiple INFORMIXDIR
Posted in 2004
Question: can several INFORMIXDIR installations (different IDS versions, e.g. 7.30 and 7.31) coexist on one machine? Answer from several posters: yes, multiple residency on Unix is standard and supported, used even in production where old apps need an older engine; Jonathan Leffler runs 7.31, 9.21, 9.30 and 9.40 on one Solaris box and points to earlier 'setixd' threads via Google. Caveat raised: v7 drops links/libraries in /usr/lib and /usr/bin; Art Kagel suggested not relying on them and setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH to $INFORMIXDIR/lib, lib/esql, lib/tools, though Leffler noted this doesn't help setuid-root programs or libraries loaded by absolute path (ON-Bar, optical storage, HPL).

Hi, Can i have more d'un one INFORMIXDIR in a the same machine? We are running IDS 7.30 UC7 under AIX 4.3.3 and IDS 7.31.UD6 under AIX 5.1 Tanks for helping. sending to informix-list

But, if you are asking if you can have multiple INFORMIXDIRs, and thereby multiple versions of Informix, on any one system than the answer is yes, this is a quite acceptable technique.
Yes. I've seen testing servers that had many $INFORMIXDIR directories, ... along with multiple $ORACLE_HOME directories. This is also OK with Informix support. Hope this information helps. Indeed, I have some sites where we do this in production. This is necessary where application considerations dictate that an older version of IDS must be used. In one example, the customer has deployed an elderly version of Business Objects which requires a v7 repository, whilst the rest of the estate is v9.

Just do not rely on the links. Set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$INFORMIXDIR/lib:$INFORMIXDIR/lib/esql:$INFORMIXDIR/lib/tools

Unfortunately, that only works for the regular executables - client
programs like SQLCMD - and those do not use the libraries in /usr/lib
anyway. The libraries under /usr/lib are for the optical storage
manager, ON-Bar backups, and the custom function libraries for the
HPL. Setuid root executables do not use LD_LIBRARY_PATH (too much
danger of an imposter supplying a library that does what they want it
to do and not what the application expects it to do). Additionally,
the libraries are mostly loaded explicitly by absolute pathname -
/usr/lib/iosm07a.so - and not using a relative pathname - iosm07a.so -
so LD_LIBRARY_PATH wouldn't help even if a non-SUID root program was
running.

Try Googling for setixd - April and August 2002 for two such threads. Multiple residency is another plausible term for it. > We are running IDS 7.30 UC7 under AIX 4.3.3 and IDS 7.31.UD6 under AIX 5.1 But not on the same machine at the same time? I have 7.31, 9.21, 9.30, 9.40 all installed (and usually 3 of the 4 running) on my Solaris box. Unix boxes are equivalent for this purpose. The story on Windows might be different - I'd defer to those who use it (IDS on Windows) for real. -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2003.04 -- http://dbi.perl.org/
