hdr not working
Posted in 2003
After rebooting the HDR secondary, replication failed with "DR: Failure recovery error (2)" / "Cannot connect to secondary" on the primary and "DR: Server type incompatible" on the secondary. Replies said the secondary had lost its HDR type (check with onstat -g dri) and that HDR must be rebuilt (level-0 backup on primary, restore on secondary). The poster re-created replication from scratch and it worked. Advice for next time: switch the primary to standard mode while the secondary is down, back to primary before restarting it, so the secondary replays missed logical logs — but only if the logical logs haven't wrapped on the primary.

Hi,
it's not clear what you mean by and what has happened during
"rebooted the secondary".
The message means that one server (most likely the Secondary)
is in a wrong state, i.e. is not part of the HDR type any longer.
Try "onstat -g dri" to check for this.
You may have to setup HDR again (beginning with level 0 backup
on Primary ...).
Regards,
Martin

Obviously, your primary is still in 'primary' mode, but what mode is your
secondary in? I'm guessing that it might be in 'standard' mode. Restart
your secondary and run an 'onstat -g dri' on it -- what mode does it report?

This message, 19:13:00 DR: Server type incompatible is a bad sign for HDR. You need to start over HDR. I would suggest that soon after your secondary goes down, you change HDR status on the primary server to standard to prevent incompatible server. Subsequently, change HDR Status back to primary just before you restart the secondary database engine. By default, the secondary server will resume processing the logical logs that had been missed since it went down. James Lonesto G Oidem wrote: > Hi, > We have a HDR setup here. Hi James, Thanks a lot. I re-started again the replication back to square one and it worked. I just want to know, do I just need to turn the primary server to standard mode while the secondary server is down? Am I going to let the users go on with their normal data entry while in the standard mode, then just switch back to primary server mode just like that? Will there be any synchronization issue again? rgds, nes 007 wrote: > This message, > > 19:13:00 DR: Server type incompatible > > is a bad sign for HDR. Hi, James is right, when it comes back, Secondary will start picking up logical logs from Primary. This will work only as long as there hasn't been a logical log wrap-around on the Primary. Once that has happened on Primary while Secondary is down, Secondary can't get the logs it needs to begin with from Primary, since they are only on tape (hopefully), but have been overwritten on disk. So that's the "point of no return" and in that case you have to setup HDR anew with backup on Primary, restore on Secondary, etc. Having said that it's pretty obvious that more and/or bigger logical logs will extend the time frame for re-synchronisation ...
