They allready have (or at least to Windows 3.1), but it isn't exactly the best of products. Also it requires a Windows based PC to run, and that doesn't seem to be what you want. :Our company would like to be able to run our Informix-4GL application on the NT platform. You can with the above mentioned product, although I wouldn't do it. :We are planning on porting the application to a GUI environment, but we feel that in some situations, :especially in industrial environments, a character-based terminal (such as a Wyse 50) will :suffice in running the application. Some companies don't have the resources to purchase a PC :for every workstation and an inexpensive character-based terminal will hold up better in that :environment. Our application runs on the Unix OS, so I'm very familiar with that, but not with :NT. Will NT support character-based terminals? No, that's your true problem here. NT doesn't and will not ever support character based terminals. (There *may* be some strange solutions out there that makes it possible, but...) You could however run your 4GL applications on a Unix based application server and have them connect to an Informix database on an NT server. Although I haven't tested this, it should work fine. This way you could retain your character terminals for some time. Using a PC with SCO (or possibly some other) Unix it would work much like a terminal server for NT (although it truely would be an application server), and you shouldn't get much problems from your customers. It might be a little expensive though. : It would be great if Informix would port :Informix-4GL to the NT OS. That way we would be able to tap the NT marketplace. Does :anyone else share these views? No, I do not share these views. It can't be done. Even to port 4GL for the purposes of writing GUI programs isn't a good idea. NewEra was made for this purpose. It seems by now that the future for this type of applications, where you need lightweight clients, lies with Java and running the applications on a simple PC or possibly even an NC. :Thanks for any comments on this subject! :Candy McCall :On-Line Computing, Inc. :candym@olcinc.com Nils.Myklebust@idg.no NM Data AS, P.O.Box 9090 Gronland, N-0133 Oslo, Norway My opinions are those of my company The Informix FAQ is at http://www.iiug.org
