I am trying to find out how much interest there would be in publishing a book based on content from the comp.database.informix newsgroup. As an Informix programmer, I rely on many sources to help me with my work. I have found the number of books on informix relatively scarce and expensive compared to other RDBMS. I have read the comp.database.informix newsgroup on and off over the last few years and have found the information contributed by its users extremely valuable. In the past, I have preached the benefits of of the newsgroups to my employers and clients. Having access to the newsgroups for the IS staff would pay for itself many times over. However for a variety of reasons access is not always possible. I, personally, go tired of staring at a monitor for 12 hours a day. This is when I came up with the idea of printing a reference book based on the content of the informix newsgroup. This would allow me to peruse it at my leisure and not be tied to a computer and phone line. This book is for my own use and will not violate anyone's copyrights. however, I am pondering if this type of book would be of any use to anyone else in the informix community? I am trying to compess a year's worth of postings into 500 pages. The book would have indexes on subject lines, names of the posters, and other key words. In publishing this book for others I believe I would need to obtain permission from all the posters as well as the informix organizations involved. As a way to be fair to all, I thought about reward mechanism where those postings that were published would share in the profits from the sale of the book and at the same time encourage others to share their solutions. I have noted that many of the posters are consultants or belong to third party software development companies. As a second reward for their postings, they would get free advertising in the book. Please note that I am not out to unjustly enrich myself from other people's efforts, but that I am trying to make available information that newsgroup users take for granted available to those who may not have access. For this project to take place, I need to have an idea of how many people would be interested in it. Would they buy such a book. Would users give permission for their postings to be published. What type of publication restrictions should exist? I would like to get a major publisher interested in making this book available at a a decent price $30 -$50? (Remember its a years worth of postings) Please email me at cesaru@www.dfwmm.net Thank you, Cesar Urquidez
