Having a problem with text field - any ideas ?

Using Informix Dynamic Server Version 7.2 on solaris..
I have a table which contains amongst other columns, an Informix text
type column (Nulls
not allowed)
I have a legacy program which does an insert, and is supposed to (but
perhaps isnt)
put a string of two spaces into this column. When I select this row in
dbaccess the
data gets put on the next line.
see trn_narrative field below
in the case where trn_narrative is supposed to be populated with a
string of 2 spaces.
trn_amount 500000.00
trn_narrative
trn_update_no 0
or in the case where trn_narrative contained data...
trn_amount 500000.00
trn_narrative
OPENING_BALANCE
trn_update_no 0
However if I run the same select command but unload the results to a
file
for the first case the trn_narrative contains "PENING BALANCE". In the
second case the value is correct i.e. "OPENING BALANCE".
So my question is what exactly is in the field trn_narrative in the
first case ?
Why does dbaccess put the value on the next line in both cases ?
Why does the conents of this field appear to be different between
dbaccessselect and unload to select... ?
TIA,
Al.

This appears to be dbaccess specific. Any text value that is not null is
reported starting on the next line.

This could be something to do with your terminal display.
You could try selecting part of the text column (I'm not sure that its
possible in v7.2 - works on v7.3x)
select trn_narrative[1,10] ...
