Setting NUMCPUVPS

Can you set NUMCPUVPS = physical number of CPUs? We have 4 CPUs but were told that NUMCPUVPS should be 1 less than the physical number. Are there any risks at setting it to the actual number of CPUs? Thanks in advance.... :) Val Valerie H. Webber Valerie.H.Webber@m1.irs.gov 704-569-1002 x107
It depends on the speed of the CPUs and what else you will have running on
the system. For a dedicated server with CPU faster than 400MHZ or so,
depending on the specific CPU also, there are reports of getting increased
performance with as many CPU VPs as 2 time the number of CPUS! With
slower CPUs definitely not. If the machine is not a dedicated server you
may want to reserve one CPU, at least, for other task as the Informix
oninit processes NEVER relinquish the CPU they only expire their
timeslice. This is even more true if your platform supports KAIO since the KAIO
thread jumps in during any I/O waits.
