Planning a new Installation
Posted in 2014
A poster asked how to plan a new Informix (IDS) installation — which edition, OS, CPU, memory and disk to choose for a given business. Respondents said no generic answer exists and listed the factors that drive sizing: concurrent user count, database size, table count/size, OLTP vs OLAP, failover needs, bulk load and backup strategy, and budget. Art Kagel linked a developerWorks article comparing Informix editions, and Marcus Haarmann suggested the free Developer or Innovator-C editions for self-study. The poster later posted concrete requirements (~1500 users, 500 GB OLTP, HDR/RSS), but no sizing recommendation or resolution is recorded in the thread.

Hello Everybody, i want to learn how to set up a new IDS platform based on a business needs, there are many articles especially on the IBM developersworks site, but i miss some informations (what kind of server choose ? how many resources CPU, Memory, Disks...etc ? what version of IDS choose ? thanks in advance
Let's start with the business needs. Can you elaborate? Hi, there are multiple things to consider. These are e.g.: - number of (concurrent/total) users - estimated size of the planned databases - layout of the databases (how many tables, how big) - type of the database (OLAP vs. OLTP) - needed failover capabilities - need for periodic full loads of data - plans for backup (to disk, to tape, to a standby server) - budget ! Without knowing your needs, there cannot be a good advice from anybody. Also, things like disk layout, type of disks (shared in a SAN, or local, SAS, SATA or other, maybe SSD or in-memory data could be an option), amount of local memory (4GB up to TB), OS choice (Windows, Linux, Solaris, HPUX, AIX) are very important for getting a good performance. But it always depends on your needs. IBM has many editions, which are designed for different needs, starting from a "learning" edition for personal use, a very limited edition (4GB memory, 32bit), a group edition, which is designed for "smaller" servers (up to 16 GB memory), and the high end versions, including or not including special capabilities for OLAP data mining. There is no such thing as an article covering "IDS for your business", which will fit every need and budget. So, give us details, and there might be somebody pointing you in the right direction. Thanks Marcus, your response really helps :) in fact i would like to work on informix on my own, and i was wondering how to start if a client contact me for a new informix platform

Hi, I f it is for yourself only, get a developer edition, which is limited in data size but has almost all features. Alternative can be an Innovator-C edition, which is limited mostly for memory usage and CPU cores. Setting up the DB is mostly identical, while the parameters vary by platform/size of RAM/Disks etc. If you want to program/port applications against IDS, whatever programming language you choose, the server edition does not matter for testing. Hello to All, I try to elaborate in order to have idéas about possible platform (windows, linux, aix ..etc) resources (CPU/core (how many ? important for informix licensing), memory, storage ..etc) and informix versions : - number of (concurrent/total) users --> about 1500 - estimated size of the planned databases --> 1 database, 500 Go - layout of the databases (how many tables, how big) --> about 500 tables, the biggest may have 400 millions rows - type of the database (OLAP vs. OLTP) --> OLTP - needed failover capabilities --> yes, HDR, RSS ? - need for periodic full loads of data --> Full export monthly - plans for backup (to disk, to tape, to a standby server) --> L0 weekly, L1 daily, to disk. - budget ! --> not established yet thanks in advance
