Consolidation servers

Hi, We are in the process of consolidating database servers. At this moment, each Production database has is own server with 2 or 4 CPU. The new server will hold from 3 to 5 databases, each server has 6 CPU. In the current config file of Informix, the parameter NUMCPUVPS is set to #of physical CPU - 1. What value should I put for the new server? 2 or 5? Regards
Diane,
It depends some on what else the server is doing, but 5 might be a target -- 1
for the system itself and the other 5 dedicated to Informix. You may also want
to tweak the NETTYPE parameter. Other parameters may look like this (these are
from a box with 4 CPUs):
NETTYPE tlitcp,3,300,CPU # Configure poll thread(s) for nettype
...
MULTIPROCESSOR 1 # 0 for single-processor, 1 for multi-processor
NUMCPUVPS 3 # Number of user (cpu) vps
SINGLE_CPU_VP 0 # If non-zero, limit number of cpu vps to one
NOAGE 1 # Process aging
AFF_SPROC 0 # Affinity start processor
AFF_NPROCS 3 # Affinity number of processors (no of cpus)
This is for 9.21.UC3 on a Solaris box.

Hi,
We are in the process of consolidating database servers.
At this moment, each Production database has is own server with 2 or 4 CPU.
The new server will hold from 3 to 5 databases, each server has 6 CPU.
In the current config file of Informix, the parameter NUMCPUVPS is set to
#of physical CPU - 1.
What value should I put for the new server? 2 or 5?

Hi,
I think there exists no single answer. It depends on
your applications.
Do they impose a high CPU load? Only sometimes or all
day long? Have all applications their peaks at the same
time?
In general I think it doesn't hurt to 'overload' the
machine. But perhaps you want to slow down one particular
application to save CPU cycles for your other instances?
You should activate wait statistics on the instances (even
if they are productive) in the onconfig files:
WSTATS 1You can evaluate them with something like
dbaccess sysmaster << eof
select sum(cumtime) , reason
from sysseswts where reason <> 'condition'
group by 2 order by 1 desc
eof
If you see 'mt ready' at the top, you have too little CPU
power for the instance (or bad queries / missing indices :-)
You can dynamically adjust the number of CPU VPs with
onmode -p +<number> CPU
onmode -p -<number> CPU
You will have to monitor and try.
