Re: Running Informix on a Pentium based System
Posted in 2000
We have been running our apps on INFORMIX since S.E 4.1 (1980s) to IDS 7.3x (today) on INTEL based machines. We are an END USER NATURAL GAS DISTRIBUTOR. Consider our billing system (around 100000 bills a month) and a history of four years (our databases are 5Gb and growing up). The OS is SCO OPEN SERVER 5.0.5. We are satisfied, the engine works fine and we think there is no reason (for us at least), to go to an expensive platform as SUN (SOLARIS), or IBM. Sorry for my english. --- Thomas Parsli <thomas.parsli@startsiden.no> escribi': > "Jerry Chimutanda" <jerry@compcentre.uz.ac.zw> > writes: > > > We are considering switching from Access to > Infomix, and my boss thinks > > Informix can not be run on a pentium based > computer, preferring someting > > like a SUN box instead. > > > > Could I be enlightened here? > > Yes you could. > > Both SE and IIF.2000 (aka Dynamic Server 9.2) run on > Linux. > Linux runs on more hardware than windows and it's > free. > (Don't tell your boss it's free, suits usally gets > bad vibes > and starts thinking about communism when they learn > this) > > It's also more stable and faster, but your boss > probably don't > care about that. > > I believe there's other intel-OSes you could use > (SCO?), but > other will probably tell.. > > If Informix _did_ care, they'd list supported > OS/hardware on their > pages -but they obviously don't.
