I've got Progress, Oracle ,Informix and a couple other unix databases. Informix 4GL is the most powerful programming language of them all, IMHO. I use it for everything I can. The combination of R4GL and the IDB means fast code development and good location of run-time *logic* bugs. Weaknesses? Lack of math function support (my favourite :). Progress beats it hollow in this area, forcing me to use it on occasion (lost sale every time.). An overly beaureaucratic sales structure. 4 to 5 weeks from placement of order to delivery is a scandal. Tech support could be improved (see post re SQRT). The 4.x engine lacked most RI features but this is fine in 5.x. I use SE so I can't comment on Online. Our apps tend to be very complex but not much data; typically no more than 100Mb in size. As for serious, I have models complex enough that I'm up against the index and constraints limits and may have to denormalise or redesign... I don't know what your apps are, but IMO, if it can be done, you can do it in Informix and that *doesn't* apply to Oracle or Progress. If it did, I'd switch. Peter Wiley
