For each instance of Online that you want to reach over a network, you have to setup a service in /etc/services. Service name and port number can be chosen arbitrarily, as long as they don't conflict with any other names and numbers on the network. For example, in your /etc/services file (or equivalent), you define: bubble_net 11111/tcp # Network port for Online-instance "bubble" Then on the server, after your instance is started (tbinit) with the correct TBCONFIG set, you start "$INFORMIXDIR/lib/sqlexecd bubble_net". Now the "sqlexecd" daemon (you need Informix-STAR for this!) knows that it has to listen on the "bubble_net" port for incoming connections. On your client, you define the service name "bubble_net" in SETNET32. Of course, you also need an identical entry for that service on your client.
