Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
John Carlson asked for a better way to run a quick backup to /dev/null than switching to a separate ONCONFIG file. Art S. Kagel said nothing was better and described commenting TAPEDEV /dev/null in and out, or an operator script that edits ONCONFIG. Doug McAllister and Rudy Fernandes suggested onbar -b -F (or onbar -F), a fake backup that needs no storage manager.

What is the recommended methodology for running a quickie backup to
/dev/null? I've been maintaining a separate ONCONFIG file and switching
to it (onconfig.devnull) just for the backup procedure. Anything out
there better?

Nothing better, just variations on a theme. I have "TAPEDEV /dev/null"
commented out and when I need it I comment out the tape drive's entry
and uncomment this line. The operators who perform the backups have a
script they use, exclusively, that lets then select the tape drive and
then edits the ONCONFIG file to install the correct TAPEDEV and
TAPESIZE for that drive (we have DLT7000, DLT4000, and 4mmDAT arrays
on each machine) so I don't worry about forgetting to change it back.
(Or I can use the script myself it also permits /dev/null.)

Try doing onbar -b -F
This does a "fake" backup as if you had done ontape to /dev/null.
You do not need a storage manager behind onbar to do this.

If you have onbar, you could try " onbar -F ".
