XML Parsers

Can anyone recommend a product which runs under AIX (preferred) or Windows 9x/NT which can read and parse an XML data stream and load the result in to a set of Informix (or ODBC-connected) tables? I'm looking for something fairly complete which could be called from a shell script or batch file rather than class libraries/components to be used from Java, C++ or some such programming language. Hi Irwin, I don't know of any XML Parsers that qualify since they all expose their functionality, in order to be XML compliant, via DOM and SAX which are two programming APIs so they are all setup to be embedded inside of a larger program. What you could do is get the version of XERCES that provides PERL bindings from http://xml.apache.org/xerces-p/index.html, and create a wrapper routine for that which you can call (using DBD::INFORMIX to talk to the database). If it were me I would use Java (and http://xml.apache.org/xerces-p/index.html) and write a wrapper that simply exposed the subset of functionality I needed and used JDBC to talk back to the DBMS - my reasoning is that there are heaps of books out there that can show you how to use Java versions of XML parsers, as well as things such as http://www.jdom.org and http://java.sun.com/xml which simplify the problem of using an XML parser for you (simply provide a higher level interface for manipulating XML documents). There is also an example you can download of doing this with Informix products working with a XML Parser (xerces was the one used to build this I believe) which you can use to read and write XML streams to and from the DBMS. You can download that from IDN at http://www.informix.com/idn-secure/xml/. There is also a tool coming out from Informix next month (version 1.1 of the Object Translator product) that you can use to create mappings between the DBMS schema and XML documents, generates Java objects which are then used to read/write XML to and from the DBMS. You could then embed those objects in a Java program that you called from your Shell Script to read and write the XML stream.
