If you are encountering long transactions, it means you hit a point where the transaction would span more of the log space than is safe to avoid filling the logs up. The fact that a log has not been backed up will not change that long transaction point; it is the amount of space spanned by the transaction relative to the total amount of space available. A log involved in a long transaction would not be reused even if it was backed up, as it is needed on disk in the event the transaction needs to be rolled back. So setting the log backup device to /dev/null would NOT eliminate long transactions in any circumstance. One could increase LTXHWM and LTXEHWM, but without knowing a lot of details about how IDS works and how log space is used, you could put your system into a totally screwed-up state by doing so. Best bet is to add more log space, at least temporarily.
