It seems it's a bug in password validation. The first
connection methods work because they don't use password validation
but user/host equivalence (as rcmd).
It could be a bug, but I would check out what user/password database
(plain /etc/passwd file or /etc/shadow, or may be NIS)
are you using (or what PAM do you use).
Sorry, I can't tell you more since I don't now very much of Linux
(and Informix on Linux),
