INX_UTIL: Alive and kicking. :-)
Posted in 1995
To all: :-) I used to feel guilty posting here, possibly using up some precious "bandwidth", but in looking at some of these posts, that guilt is quickly vanishing. :-) Anyway, I've once again put together an update of some tools. They're at my home page and ftp site. Your comments, sugestions and improvements are extremely appreciated, and encouraged. Don't be shy. Chit Chat I've put a new look to the home page as well. I realize internet access via a web browser is but a dream to some folks, and only through Lynx for others. But such is life. My biggest challenge of late has been trying to find a decent Windows news reader. WinVN seems to have gone in reverse, and FreeAgent is "interesting". Your suggestions for a good no-nonsense news reader are welcome. Netscapes' latest version dies alot under Windows 95, so I don't feel so bad when it comes to bugs in freeware. The recent death of UnixWare has also given me cause to find a new good Intel-based UNIX. Linux is looking better every day, but it don't run INFORMIX, so on to other choices. Changes make_mk has been vastly improved. This critter makes makefiles. The previous incantation had a few bugs, and it now does ESQL .ec files. mk_popup was changed. This one creates INPUT/DISPLAY ARRAY screens. It had not been brought forward and improved like mk_scrg, which does a default one-table per. It may go through some more changes, but it should work better than in the past. mk_scrg was also improved with a command-line argument to either put borders on the PER or leave them off. This eliminates having a separate program for bordered screens and another for plain vanilla screens. It still works like the Form generator in ISQL, splitting up the screen to span more than one screen. The interactive "inxutil" programs were changed lately to eliminate the use of tput as much as possible. Recent use on an HP9000 and RS6000 helped me decide on ESC codes rather than tput. Yes I bought the book from O'reilly, and posted to comp.terminals my questions. I kept getting the annoying and arcane "tput: usage: tput -Tterm capname" message, but could not overcome it. I have ATT's book on terminfo, and tried every capname known to mankind, but to know avail. So the new stuff is "capless", using escape codes instead. This is a faster method anyway, reducing a call to the tput program. If you're a shell scripter you might want to use some of the routines to dress up your shell scripts. Given that 4GL executables are getting monstrous even after stripping them, you might give shell scripts a second look for menus and such. There's other numerous changes. The latest update includes anything that was touched since September 5, 1995, so many of the tools had a brush with vi. The code cranks were also diddled with in some way or another too. At any rate, the price is right. I hope they provide a benefit to you. Of late I've had to choose between tools, diving, and sailing, so my priorities with the tool kit are constantly being challenged. I know you'll understand.
