Re: Use I4GL 4.0 with Dynamic Workgroup Server?
Posted in 1998
With the IDS Workgroup edition on Unix there is a relay module that can be used to run version 4.x 4GL programs against a 7.x database engine. This will not give the same performance as if you recompiled with version 6.x or 7.x of 4GL but it does work reasonably well. If you upgrade to a new fast machine and to IDS I would expect faster performance than you had even with the relay module in the picture. If you realy do have version 4.0 (not 4.1x) of I4GL there may be some problems as that version was problematic in itself. Also I assume if you continue to use SCO Unix you will upgrade to a new version (from 3.2.4.x to 5.0.4??) which may lead to problems by itself. We have done such upgrades without recompiling and using the relay module, but that was from 4.1x of 4GL. With such OS upgrades you should recompile your applications. If you run the database on Windows NT you will need I-Connect or possibly I-Net (an older version of I-Connect) on your SCO server so the 4GL programs can connect to the server on Windows NT. I don't know if the relay module is included with I-Connect or if you need some old I-Net for this purpose. If you want to run your 4GL programs on NT you need Dynamic 4GL to recompile them for NT. As you presumably have people that know SCO Unix I would continue to run the database server on that OS and connect to it from MS Windows programs. That works very well. Then you would also have an easy upgrade path to Linux as soon as Informix releases IDS for Liunx if you should want that.
