Searching text fields

Is there any way to search a column of type TEXT in Informix? From the documentation the answer appears to be no, so my next question is: how can you have a searchable column which can hold more than 255 characters, other than the incredibly space-wasting CHAR (n) type? if you have the lvarchar datatype you can still use like and matches on the text. and you have a very large amounts of data you can store there, up to 32K.
