It just seems hat way, it is not what is really happening.
Don't trust top and dont trust ps. They are both getting it wrong and =
counting the shared memory signature multiple times.
You need all those oninints!
To find out how much shared memory they are really using,=20
use ipcs -b to see the shared memory segment size. This is the true =
amount allocated to Informix, nothing more.
Or, look at the top line of any onstat output to see how much ram is =
allocated to the system.
use onstat -g seg to see how ,much of that is actively in use (the rest is =
available to the system).
Multiply the blkfree column by 8192 to get bytes free.
All of these actions will show you that you are using a heap less memory =
than you might think.
A problem with calculating memory use on Solaris is that free memory is =
cribbed as a cache, so vmstat etc does not give an accurate picture of =
memory usage. To know true memory usage , add up all the non-shared =
memory processes from ps, and then add the amount being used by informix.
attached is a script which adds up the non-oninit memory usage in Solaris.

Is there a way to limit the number of oninit processes that get spawned?
I'm using 7.20.UC4 for Solaris. They each eat up about 15 megs, and =
several of them dont get used at all.
