offline replication
Posted in 2003
A developer needed to replicate a central Informix 9.20 database (HP-UX) out to remote regional sites that also update data locally, but the sites have no network connection to the main server. Respondents first suggested built-in Enterprise Replication (not HDR), but when the poster clarified that he needs a transportable copy on tape/disk rather than a live connection, Madison Pruet said ER won't do that; the only approach he knew was insert/update/delete triggers writing rows plus operation and timestamp/serial into a staging table, then unloading that table and applying it at the targets. No further discussion follows.

Hi. We're developing a database application for administrative tasks and we need to replicate our main database thru a few sites. The problem is that those sites won't be on-line and need to insert/update regional data (it's not necessary that the new data are available immediately). Does anybody knows a technique to do this painless? We are thinking about an application solution (keeping track of new or modified records to distribute on every site) but we think this is problematic and maybe dangerous in some degree. I already read the "Administrator's Guide" for any clue, but I didn't find anything similar. Our main server is a HP 9000 machine with HPUX 11.0 and Informix 9.20D5. Every other site will work with a small server (Intel) using Linux and a newer version of Informix. We're developing on Windows. I hope that somebody can help us. Thanks.
I beleive Enterprise Replication that is built into IDS will do all this for you. Why re-invent the wheel? Yes, search in the Informix guides for Enterprise Replication, that's what you needs ! (don't confuse it with High Data Replication) Yves -----Original Message----- From: nobody@ace.iiug.org [mailto:nobody@ace.iiug.org] Sent: vrijdag 4 juli 2003 18:05 To: ids@iiug.org Subject: offline replication [1499] Hi. But Enterprise Replication can give us a 'transportable' copy (in tape or disk file) of the data needed to be updated rather than try to connect to any other server to make the updates by itself? That's our main problem: we can't have connected our servers (for geographical reasons); if Enterprise Replication can do the above, then I'll go for it.
If this is a requirement, then the only way that I know of to do this is to put insert/update/delete triggers on the table and put a copy of the row with it's operation and time (or serial column) into a staging table, unload the table, then apply on the targets.
