Backup/Restore Primary/HDR
Posted in 2016
Dave (IDS 11.70.FC7, Solaris 11, ON-Bar + NetBackup) asked whether promoting an HDR secondary to primary requires a new full backup. Replies: logical logs resync automatically, just point backups at the new primary, use the storage manager's redirected/"imported" restore, and keep the ixbar file synchronised. In testing, restoring the old primary's level-0 plus logs failed when ON-Bar reached logs whose ixbar entries carried the new primary's server name (NetBackup couldn't find them; error -43168, hint to set IFX_SERVERNUM). His workaround was deleting the old server's ixbar entries and restarting the log restore; his request for a cleaner config/env-variable solution got no recorded answer.

Hi,
We are running 11.70.FC7 on Solaris 11. We use onbar for informix
backups. How does backup/restores work when switching from a primary to
HDR (new Primary) server? Do I need to do another full backup when
promoting an HDR server to Primary or can the logs being backed up by the
HDR by applied to the backup on the previous primary for the purposes of
restores?
Thank you,

Hi, Dave.
Informix HDR do an automatic resync of your logical logs, after promotion of a
new primary node.
You just have to take care about the new primary backups, using onbar + your
SM. Your new primary should be the new source for all your backups on
tape/disk, ok?
Hope it helps.
Regards.

You can restore on the secondary from an archive made on the primary if
needed. Your storage manager will be providing the documentation about how
you have to do that. Onbar just needs the onbar history which is in the
server. Some storage managers need a command line option to do the remote
restore others an environment variable to specify the source system, etc.

Good to hear that the logs will sync. Of course I will test, just wanted
to make sure I am headed in the right direction.
Yes I understand after the switchover, all onbar/storage manager backups
will need to be done on the new primary.
Thank You,

Don't forget to transfer (or otherwise synchronize) ixbar file in case you =
should have to rely on a cold restore from an (onbar) backup still taken=20

Hi Andreas,
Excellent point and thank you for pointing that out. Yes I will need to
figure out some sort of sync to keep the ixbar file always moved/current on
the current primary.
Thank You,

Hi,
So I have not gotten this to work yet. Does anyone have any input or
suggestions on how to make it work? We are using onbar with Veritas
Netbackup.
We are testing the following:
1) Full backup on the primary and also rolling through and backing up a
few logs on the primary.
2) Switchover and promote the HDR to primary
3) Copy over the ixbar file to the new primary and roll through and backup
a few logs on the new primary
4) Then we are trying to restore from the full backup from orig primary
and restore all the logs on orig primary and hdr server.
However, this doesn't work. As you can see from the sample ixbar file
below, the orig primary is called "stg" and the orig hdr is called "tst".
We are able to restore the full backup using "onbar -r -p -w". However,
when we run "onbar -r -l" it will restore all the logs from stg 49-52,
though stops when it gets to log # 53 from the "tst" server. Then the
engine goes into quiescent mode and it will not allow it to start another
log restore.
Sample ixbar file:

Have you consulted Symantec's NetBackup for Informix Admin Guide? (google=20
"netbackup informix guide")
I think the important chapter for you is "Redirecting an Informix restore=20
to a different client" ('client' is the database server here).
We call this "imported restore" ... each storage manager has its own set=20
of rules to follow in this case, but it's a fully valid and supported=20
scenario.

Hi,
Thank You. Yes I am familiar with the doc you mentioned. Yes we do the
imported/redirected restore all the time leveraging the INFXBSA_CLIENT env
variable.
From my testing it seems the issue here is related to the primary server
name being "tst" and the HDR (new primary) server being called "stg". When
onbar backs up the logs it uses the name of the server to mark the backup
image (first field in the ixbar file see snippet below).
ixbar file snippet:
stg 51 L 0 60 0 1 1468532854 2016-07-14 17:47:48
stg 52 L 0 61 0 1 1468532903 2016-07-14 17:48:37
tst 53 L 0 62 0 1 1468597115 2016-07-15 11:38:49
tst 54 L 0 63 0 1 1468597148 2016-07-15 11:39:17
So the restore starts good and restores all the logs from the "stg"
server. However, onbar stops with the following error once it tries to
restore the logs from the "tst" server. I discovered after the log restore
fails I can trick onbar and delete all the "stg" entries and restart the
log restore, though I am hoping there is a more elegant way to achieve
this. Is there perhaps a config setting or env variable to set to force
this entry in the ixbar file regardless of which server actually does the
backup? Or other solution?
netbackup error:

2016-07-19 09:38:29 9308 9297 If doing an imported restore, and if the
value of SERVERNUM parameter in
ONCONFIG file of the current database server is different from that of the
source database server, try setting IFX_SERVERNUM environment variable
to the source SERVERNUM value prior to re-starting log restore.
