At a new company that uses Informix, and I need to make some quick changes to move them to latest supported IDS 7.3x and also moving database from HP-UX to new Linux server, while moving applications to new HP-UX 11.23+ server with SQL Dev 7.32, CSDK, etc. Should be straight forward as long as schemas don't use any new reserved words (for that release). Looking for reserved word comparison for IDS 7.24, 7.3x, 10.1, 10.5 if available for comparing SQL, schemas, stored procedures, triggers. No blobs in use so that skips some of the blob related changes. In going from IDS 7.24 to IDS 7.31, are there any issues with porting Stored Procedures or Triggers from IDS 7.24? Also, a bit specific, any issues from migrating database from HP-UX 10.x to RHEL 4 ES kernel and environment? Thank, Larry Timmins Systems Division Manager P.S. (POsted the questions below to Linux-Informix forum which might apply here:) FYI -- Informix on Linux 32-bit. 1. For initial port, we'll look at 32-bit Linux Informix 2. Considering Oracle LInux (RHEL 4 with Oracle Phone support) over Red Hat. Trial calls appear to give better response for database Linux users Any reason why IBM Informix won't work on ORacle Linux (free downloads available for testing) 3. Any specific conflicts with IBM Informix 7.31 and RHEL 4 kernel? All utilities? Unload/load, etc? 4. Any specific conflicts with IBM Informix SQL Development or CSDK and RHEL Linux libraries, recommendations on loading compatibility C / Dev't libraries, etc. 5. Any real reason to go 64-bit Linux now coming from HP-UX 10 on Itanium? Thanks in advance, Larry T
Hi Larry, Nice to hear from you. I'd go 10 directly. It's a very nice engine. I haven't done any migration but many have and I never heard of much complexity. I know a few service companies that can assist you. You can get version 10 from IIUG and get accustomed to it. jgp > -----Original Message----- > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of > LARRY TIMMINS > Sent: Thursday, November 09, 2006 04:43 > To: ids@iiug.org > Subject: 7.2x to 7.31 - Stored Procs, Trigger, SQL diffs [7779] > > > At a new company that uses Informix, and I need to make some quick changes > to > move them to latest supported IDS 7.3x and also moving database from HP-UX > to > new Linux server, while moving applications to new HP-UX 11.23+ server > with > SQL Dev 7.32, CSDK, etc. > > Should be straight forward as long as schemas don't use any new reserved > words > (for that release). There are no porting issues going from 7.24 to 7.31 nor to 10.00xC5 (the latest IB). There has actually been several rounds of keyword reduction and syntax parser cleanup the last few years to reduce the impact of naming objects after keywords. You should be fine. I would go all the way to 10.00 myself. One gotcha in ESQL/C v7.2x versus the version in the CSDK. You will have to recompile all of your source code and ESQL/C library code with the new CSDK as the underlying library calls changed between v7.24 (the last independent ESQL/C) and the first CSDK bundled ESQL/C compiler. Some few functions have the same name but different arguments which causes the most problem. Recompiling the .ec files will fix all and the source is forward compatible. Art S.
