Thanks. I tried you suggestion, but of no use. Then I tried to "UNLOCK TABLE bcopy" and then "ALTER TABLE bcopy ...", still getting the same error!!! same error: 242: Could not open database table (libdba.bcopy). 106: ISAM error: non-exclusive access. Hi Shahid, finderr -242 describes following error possibilities: The problem might be file permissions, a hardware error, or a corrupted system catalog. Unless the ISAM error code or an operating-system message points to another cause, run the bcheck or secheck utility to verify file integrity. Did you check that? If your table contains indexes, an other possibility would be to drop all your indexes, alter the table and recreate your indexes. You can't alter a table if there are any users using the table, regardless of whether there is a lock on it. You'll need to kick all the users out of anything that references that table.
