ISM upkeep

I have successfully setup ISM on Linux SUSE 9 using Informix version 10.FC7. I
can perform database backups and continuous logical log backups to disk.
Nightly, we plan to run a full level 0 onbar backup, write the backup files to
a filesystem mount point. There is also a nightly filesystem backup run that
will backup our onbar files.
I am trying to figure out how to "manage" the backup sets. Do I learn to use
the nsradmin -c cryptic screen or manage the daily backups using ism?
I have not been able to find much information regarding the housekeeping needs
once you get ISM working. If anyone has some good examples of what they do to
manage the backups using onbar/ISM, I would appreciate the help.
Thanks,

You should not have to use the nsradmin commands unless you're trying to
do something fairly tricky.
If you look at the ISM Guide, you will find a command reference. I
suggest you read that first but here's a heads up.
1) ISM Users
For user informix to use ism_commands, after you run ism_startup -init (
as root) use:
ism_admin -add admin informix@yourHost
You may also want to add informix@otherHost and root@otherHost if
planning to import restore your DBServer(s) to other hosts.
2) ISM Devices
To add devices use ism_add -device pathToDevice -type ISMDeviceType
See the ISM Guide for supported device types (eg: file for FILESYTEM,
4mm for 4mm DAT Tape). You will probably want to use all tape devices or
all filesystem devices, not a mix.
Also, ISM can only have 4 devices at any one time online.
To see what devices are currently online use:
ism_show -devices
3) Label Media
You must label media before you can use it. To label your media use:-
ism_op -label pathToDevice -volume yourVolumeLabel -pool ISMData
and
ism_op -label pathToDevice -volume yourVolumeLabel -pool ISMLogs
If you are backing up to disk, you will need to edit your ONCONFIG file
and change the following:
ISM_DATA_POOL ISMData to ISMDiskData
and
ISM_LOG_POOL ISMLogs to ISMDiskLogs
Then use:
ism_op -label pathToDevice -volume yourVolumeLabel -pool ISMDiskData
and
ism_op -label pathToDevice -volume yourVolumeLabel -pool ISMDiskLogs
I keep 1 Logical Log Volume online at all times and when doing a backup
have 3 ISMDiskData volumes online ( max of 4 devices at one time).
4) Mount Volume
Once you have labelled your media (volumes) you can mount them with:
ism_op -mount pathToLabeledVolume
Your media must be labelled before you can mount it.
To perform a Logical Log backup you will need a mounted volume in the
pool associated with ONCONFIG parameter ISM_LOG_POOL. And then run:-
onbar -b -l
To perform a full Level 0 Data backup you will need a mounted volume in
the pool associated with ONCONFIG parameter ISM_DATA_POOL and then run:-
onbar -b -L 0
5) Other
Use ism_rm -device to detach a device from ism. NB: This does NOT remove
the contents of or the device itself.
You need to use ism_op -unmount pathToDevice before you can ism_rm
-device.
Hope that helps.
