I have given it a go and it doesn't look to elegant...just yet! I set up a small text file with a simple message saying, "Your report has finished matey!" and from another terminal I typed 'write username < message_file' and the output was splattered across the screen. Maybe I need to play around with this to try and get the format just right. I must admit, I was looking for an Informix way of doing it but I don't think it is on, ie. user initiates a report from within a 4GL, the report is run in the background, user carries on and then somehow another informix program comes back to the user to tell them the report has done and just hit a key to continue with what they were doing. Like I said, I don't think this is doable. Thanks for the tip, Ian.
